Creep Catchers and the Social Media Mob

Creep Catchers. Private citizens who have taken it upon themselves to seek out and expose pedophiles and child abusers, because they believe the system is not doing enough to find these predators and protect our children.

In concept, it is a very noble cause. In action, however, it has become a modern day lynch mob, where Guilty before Proven Innocent is the rule and accountability is almost non existent...

What’s in a Name?

What’s in a Name? Well, a lot, I hope.

Today my new URL goes live, one that (I hope) truly explains what I do; teachingsocial.media

I saw the “.media” domain pop up, about a week ago, and I thought to myself “I can use this”. I tried all of the obvious ones, first, like “social.media” and “getsocial.media”, etc., and then I started to focus on the learning aspects of a name. The most logical one was “teachingsocial.media” and the fates smiled on me.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect, either. I decided to take 2015 “off”, from actively working and promoting my business. While I am still That Social Media Guy, I am no going after new clients or projects. Instead, I am focusing on a few personal projects;

Social Media Camp.

At the en...

Launching Social Media Day in CR

You should do a pre-launch

I sat there, for a second, my mind spinning the moment that Bosco Anthony suggested the idea. Where would I hold it? What would I talk about? How would I organize, promote and execute a pre-lunch, for my upcoming Social Media Day in CR, in less than two weeks? “Brilliant idea, Bosco”, I said. “I’ll do it!” First, if you haven’t had a chance to connect with Bosco Anthony, or catching him speaking at an event, this is something that you need to add to your bucket list. One phone conversation with the man and I am off like the Mad Hatter, setting up a tea party! The ideas flowed from him. “Set up a Google Hangout and I will chat with the the people there” and “hey, we could bring in another speaker, like Cadi...

London Drugs Does It Right

How often do you see a sale made via Social Media? How often do see great customer service via Social Media? How often do you see BOTH, for the same transaction? Probably not as often as the first two, which is why I was so impressed with my recent experience with London Drugs.

So, here is the scenario. I am looking for a new back-up drive and decide that it might be time to add yet another piece of Apple tech to my network. I start looking for a good price on a 2Tb Apple Time Capsule and stumble across a great deal at London Drugs. Being the Social Media geek that I am, I tweet out “@LDCampbellriver $199 for an Apple Time Capsule!?! I am SOOO getting one! #campbellriver”. Now, there is a method to my madness...

Educate About Social Media Rather Than Banning It

When the Vancouver School Board announce that they were creating a new Social Media Policy of the School District and that the were looking for some public input, I immediately started that convo on Twitter. Soon the Vice Chair of the School Board jumped into the convo and, eventually, I submitted my two cents in the mix (writing about it in an earlier post, too).

The more I look at Social Media in the world of education, the more I see our system (in North America), banning or demonizing the medium, rather than adopting it. I have to wonder why.

I understand that the education system is slow to adopt many new things, because they need to review, assess, plan and develop what ever needs to be added into the curriculum...

Viral Happens

Recently a teen from Parksville, British Columbia, a small community on the outskirts of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, discovered what it means to have something “Go Viral“. In her high school yearbook comment she paraphrased a line from a Harry Potter movie; “Master has given Megan a High School Diploma. Megan is freeeee!” When she was interviewed about the quote, she stated that she couldn’t think of anything “inspiring”, but, being a Harry Potter fan, she decided to put something fun in, instead. She never excepted it to become a Social Media and Internet sensation.

Within hours of posting the image of her picture and quote on her Tumblr account, it had 50,000, then 100,000 views. When it was shared on Imgur.com and Reddit, that nu...
